The Rewards of Giving

A friend shared this with me recently... He "loves to cruise around and look at people's Christmas lights. This evening he added a new twist to it by having us stop so we could walk up to the home of one of the larger displays and sing 'Jingle Bells'. He has no fear. His hope was to have the owners come out and give him money so he could donate it to the hospital. I love it. His favorite saying is 'It's not about the getting but the giving'. A true giving heart at age 6."

What a pure, innocent thought put into action by a six year old. At the age of 36, I am just now understanding the rewards of giving, while expecting nothing in return. Now that I have acquired the humility to accept the fact that every gift of giving was not going to result in a success, then I was open to receive the rewards of selfless giving.

This is indeed the kind of giving that actually demands nothing. He does not expect his brother sufferer to pay him, or even to love him. And then he discovers that by the divine paradox of this kind of giving he has found his own reward, whether his brother has yet received anything or not. TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 109

Engaging selflessly, giving selflessly, loving selflessly. Humility has embedded these acts in my heart. Thank you God, for your love. GodSpeed
