A few months ago I had the pleasure to hear Wynonna Judd speak at a luncheon. She has been open about her troubles with her addictive behaviors. Wynonna shared this video of a little girl, Jessica saying her "Daily Affirmation".
Having a positive attitude and being gracious in your life can be a struggle for those that face depression and/or addiction. You are not just fighting depression/addiction, you are fighting the devil. During my active addiction I had low self-esteem and zero confidence. I used to face the mirror and tell myself how much I hated myself and what a piece of shit I was. It took an insightful therapist that told me to look in the mirror and tell myself that I loved myself. She told me to say it 20 times a day to myself and increasing it periodically...e.g. Tell yourself you love yourself even in the midst of not loving yourself...Fake it Till you Make it.
"Fake it till you make it" (also called "act as if") is a common catchphrase that means to imitate confidence so that as the confidence produces success, it will generate real confidence[1]. The purpose is to avoid getting stuck in a self fulfilling prophecy related to one's fear of not being confident, e.g., by thinking, "I can't ask that girl out because she would sense my lack of confidence." This week while I was starting my day I caught myself shouting in the mirror that, "I love myself and I love God"! Man, what a great feeling that was. When you have high praises and positivity it is like a two edged sword!
Winners carry themselves differently than losers. How are you carrying yourself? Today I can carry myself with confidence, in my progress with my relationship with God, in my attitude, and in my appreciation for my life. Today I have a peace, a purpose, a destiny.
